Procedure of Skin Banking

Skin banking is a critical process that involves the collection, processing, preservation, and storage of donated human skin for treating patients with severe burns or extensive wounds.

01.

Donor Consent & Screening

Skin is collected from deceased donors with consent from family and screened for infections like HIV, Hepatitis etc.

02.

Skin Harvesting

Split-thickness skin is removed from areas like the thighs or back within 6–12 hours of death, using sterile techniques.

03.

Processing & Testing

The skin is cleaned with antibiotics and tested for any microbial contamination. It’s then trimmed into usable sizes.

04.

Preservation

Skin is preserved using glycerol at 4°C or cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen for long-term storage.

05.

Storage

Preserved grafts are stored in sterile conditions and regularly monitored for safety.

06.

Distribution

Upon request, the skin is supplied to hospitals for treating burn victims and patients with major wounds.

Mission

Mission

To inspire people to pledge their skin for donation by making the process accessible, compassionate, and clear. We aim to connect individuals with trusted resources so that one pledge can offer healing, dignity, and renewal to those in need of skin grafts – from burn injuries to chronic wounds and beyond.

Vision

Vision

A future where skin donation is a known and valued act of kindness. We envision an India where every person understands their potential to give healing after life, helping those in need of skin grafts reclaim comfort, movement, and dignity.

About The Founder

Tiana Vengsarkar is the passionate force behind Skin’d, a youth-led movement dedicated to raising awareness about skin donation in India. An International Baccalaureate student at the American School of Bombay, Tiana founded Skin’d after an eye-opening internship at the National Burns Center, where she witnessed firsthand the life-saving impact of donated skin on burn victims.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Sunil Keswani, India’s leading burns specialist, Tiana trained in advanced burn care, including time spent in the Skin Bank and Amnion Bank. Inspired by the urgent need and deep lack of public understanding, she launched Skin’d to educate, advocate, and build bridges between potential donors, hospitals, and communities.
